Hello all,
I am looking for a FW for my shiny new Windows 7 box. And I ended up here.
As a long time Linux user, I am pretty sure of mine and my family's security when on-line, as we have used linux and it's built in securities since 1995.
The ONLY reason that I have Windows on any of my computers, is for gaming. Period. I have only recently gone on-line for gaming. I have previously played games only in offline mode. My network security in Windows previously, was as simple as disabling networking completely. Never even installing the network drivers.
So I find myself in need of something that can secure my Win7 box, so that I can game without having to worry too much. I have installed and am using the games on-line, but have been monitoring and logging all of the internet activity since I installed them.
And as previously stated, I use Linux for all of my family's on-line activities until now, and being a true believer in Linux and "open source", I found my way here.
What I am looking at for now, is a way to block everything from accessing the internet in Windows, except for the games I want to use on-line. I do not need, or want, ANY other things to access the internet. And some of the games are suspect too. Especially the one "Steam" game I have installed. Totally disabling the "cloud computing crap " is a primary goal. If I want to provide my bandwidth and CPU cycles to a project, I will sign up again with the SETI project.
I am about to totally disable "Toredo" and any other IP tunnelling features and protocols. Just the name implies insecurity.
I have even considered disabling IPv6, just because it seems to be a lot less secure than the trusty old IPv4. What is the deal with " :: " addresses anyway?
I also do not care for the way programs "call home". especially Steam and Microsoft. I don't "need no stinking updates" ;D, and if I do I will find a way to install them manually.
To that end, and since I feel like I have introduced myself, and expressed my expectations for a FW, will fireBwall do the job ?
Any help, suggestions, or constructive criticisms are welcome,
Thank you and I hope to be an acitve member of the community.
